Merapi Mountain National Park

Merapi Mountain National Park located at an altitude between 600-2968 m above sea level. Topography of the area ranging from gently sloping to hilly and mountainous. In the north there is a narrow plateau between two mountains, the Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu around District Selo, Boyolali.

In the south, the slopes of Merapi continued to fall and sloping down to the south coast on the shores of the Indian Ocean, across the city of Yogyakarta. At the foot of the mountain, there are two hills namely Bukit Plawangan and Bukit Turgo, part of tourist area Kaliurang.

Kaliurang is the resting place at the foot of Mount Merapi. Here there are many homestead. Places most visited by tourists is Tlaga Putri. In this area there is a historic building, Wisma Kaliurang, venue for the talks between the Republic of Indonesia with the Special Commission of the Three Kingdoms on January 13, 1948.

Until now Merapi Mount includes a very active volcano. Small eruptions occur every 2-3 years, and the larger about 10-15 years. You can visit Kaliadem area, the remainder of the 2006 eruption that killed 2 people volunteer in the bunker. One hallmark of Merapi volcano eruption is "Wedhus Gembel" (heat clouds), which slid from the top of this mountain.

To better understand the characteristics of Mount Merapi, there are museums volcano Ketep Pass, located Sawangan hill (halfway between Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu) Ketep village, sub Sawangan, Muntilan regency, Jawa Tengah. Ketep Pass is at height of 1200 meters asl (above sea level) and wide area approximately 8000 square meters. The museum is equipped volcano movie theater that presents the history of Mount Merapi, formation events, hiking paths, research on the top of Garuda, the massive eruption of Mount Merapi, and the events that occur within a specific time series. The duration of the film is quite short, only about 25 minutes.

Mount Merapi is the object of a popular ascent, because the mountain is breathtaking. The most common route and near the north side, from Selo, Boyolali regency, Jawa Tengah, which lies between Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu. Climbing through Selo takes an average of 5 hours to the summit.

Another popular path is through Kaliurang, Pakem District, Sleman regency, Yogyakarta on the southern side. This path is more steep and takes about 6-7 hours to the summit. Another alternative route is through the northwest side, starting from Sawangan, Magelang regency, Jawa Tengah, and through the southeast, the direction of pure-bred, Kemalang District, Klaten Regency, Jawa Tengah.
