Of all the places in Spain, the Canaries is particularly notorious for catering to the gay lifestyle. With plenty of activities and hotspots to frequent throughout the islands, there's no excuse not to go on a trip this summer and experience the Canary Islands at their most festive. With friendly people everywhere, an upbeat atmosphere and plenty of sun, it's an ideal destination for a carefree holiday.

The main event being Gay Pride, taking place each May, with the next one scheduled for May 6-12 2013. The huge celebration features live music acts, foam parties and other activities including crowning Miss Lesbian Gran Canaria or Mr Gay Gran Canaria.

Watch the king and queen of the festival as they are crowned on the beach alongside the thousands of visitors who make the journey every year, and don't forget the parade, where you can go all out with your costumes. In fact, it's encouraged.

This year, the island held its 7th-annual charity event to raise money to AIDS research and helping people to cope with the disease themselves. Although the gala is a fun event to attend, it also takes the subject of AIDS awareness seriously, with a ceremony to commemorate those who suffer and have died from the life-threatening condition.

Although Gran Canaria has the biggest gay scene and boasts brilliant carnivals, festivals and events, neighbouring island Tenerife can still hold its own, and is a very popular holiday destination. So don't forget Gran Canaria isn't the only gay friendly island, and there's plenty of opportunity to hop around. Even if you're not up for the parades, there are plenty of places that cater to gays and lesbians throughout the Canary Islands, so don't be afraid to take a trip and see the beautiful scenery for yourself.
