Pura Tanah Lot

Pura Tanah Lot temple is part of pura Dang Kahyangan, places of worship the gods guard the sea. One is situated on a rock and the other located on a cliff similar to the Pura Uluwatu Temple. Odalan, the feast at the temple is celebrated every 210 days, close to the celebration of Galungan and Kuningan, precisely on Hari Suci Buda Cemeng Langkir.

This Pura is located in the village Beraban, sub-district Kediri, Tabanan District, Bali Province. Approximately 13 km west of Tabanan. North of Tanah Lot Temple there is a temple situated on a cliff that juts into the sea. This liaison between the temples with the mainland, and shaped like a curved bridge. Tanah Lot, famous as a beautiful place to watch the sunset.

According to legend, this temple was built by a Brahmin who wander from Java, Danghyang Nirartha, which managed to strengthen the belief of the Balinese will Hindus doctrine, and build Sad Kahyangan at the 16th century. At that time the ruler of Tanah Lot, Bendesa Beraben, jealous that his followers began to leave and follow Danghyang Nirartha. Bendesa Beraben ordered Danghyang Nirartha to leave the Tanah Lot. Before leaving Tanah Lot, with power transferred to the middle of the beach stone blocks, and built temples there. He also change the shawl into a snake temple guards. Snake is still there today, and scientifically snakes include species of sea snakes that have a characteristic flat tail like a fish, striped yellow and black color has a poison 3 times more powerful than cobra snake.
