British Columbia is fast becoming a popular destination, not only for Canadians, but other international tourists as well. A local secret is also fast becoming more known in the world, the island chain of Haida Gwaii. Before you go on and book on the many Haida Gwaii hotels available, read on in this article and find out what activities are available on and around the archipelago.

Haida Gwaii is a group of islands, so expect a lot of water, and of course, water related activities. One of the prime, if not prime activity that is very much popular is the year round whale watching tours and excursions that plenty have participated in and also enjoyed.

For the island community, whale watching has been a great money earner since the area is known to be the best in the world for watching certain whale species year round. Specific whale species that are common in the area are killer whales, gray whales and humpback whales. Depending on the month or the season, you either will get increased or decreased frequencies in sightings per hour when you go. Thus it is always best to do your research on the best times to go when whale watching so you can get the most bang for your buck.

Some land based activities can be had as well in the form of hiking and camping if one is so inclined. One can also enjoy quite a few kayaking areas and fishing spots as well. A popular habit in the islands is to bike around in the morning until afternoon, whereby the what hours are left in the day is spent just lazing around the beach until evening.

Learning about the local culture and history may be something that might want to do. The local people, known as the Haida, are very proud of their heritage and would be more than willing to answer any questions that you may have. You should read up before talking to them however, so as to avoid sensitive questions and moments.

When traveling to each of the islands, one will notice the prevalence of quite a few totem poles that look surprisingly Alaskan in their characteristics. This is not surprising as the Haida also do occupy large areas of Alaskan territory. Each of these totems are accorded much respect as they are recorded histories of people on the islands.

For those who really want to explore every nook and cranny of these islands, a four day minimum is needed. In those four days you will be able to visit all the local museums and communities. You will also be exposed to local arts and crafts and a way of making furniture using bent wood. This bent wood technique is widely used by many North American Indian peoples.

The most direct route to the island group is by a two hour flight from Toronto. You can also opt to take a more scenic route by boat or ferry which can take you about 8 hours. Either way, you will enjoy you vacation here. In looking for the best accommodation therefore, find one that can give you access to all the activities thus mentioned.
